A lack of traceability means zero authentication of gemstones in most cases. Only 1/20 gemstone dealers can identify the specific mine their stone came from as most stones are sold in gemstone wet markets where bookkeepers use primitive bookkeeping methods like writing on their hands.
Poor governance has seen an increase in enslaved workers and child labour globally. These workers are paid as little as $1 a day and are forced to work in unsanitary conditions without any proper training. Children, working at these mines, are also often forced into working for the militia or other activist groups.
Bringing governance to mining practices will minimize the loss of wildlife and natural habitats, improve biodiversity and protect the environment for future generations.
